When I was a child, and mum was in the mood to tell a story, they were not fairy tales; they were either real-life events or stories with a moral at the end. Some of them I have read over the years, but there is this one story I have never come across. It was about two women, one a mother, the other a beggar. Before telling the story, mum would say, “If you do good, you do it to yourself. If you do bad, you do it to yourself”.

Mamma’s Fable

The story went like this. There was a beggar woman who would go to her neighbor’s house occasionally and beg for food. Whenever she received anything from her neighbor, after thanking her, she would say, “If you do good, you do it to yourself. If you do bad, you do it to yourself.”

One night in question, her neighbor had baked and cooked up her son’s favorite dishes because he was coming home from abroad that night. While preparing for her son, she baked a special cake for her neighbor, who she expected would come by that evening. When the beggar…
